All 79 locations and their exits, drawn from the room records at B97A (room 0 is a dummy). Each box shows the room number and the name the game uses for it. Grey boxes are dark rooms, where Bilbo sees nothing without the glowing sword (954D); boxes with a heavy outline have a picture (CC00). Lines are labelled with the directions each way; an arrow marks an exit that only goes one way. Dashed blue lines pass through a door (named on the line), and dotted red lines are the five hidden routes, one of which is closed at random in each game until Elrond reads the map (970B, A6B8).
Every room can be reached from Bilbo's hall, once the doors are open and the hidden route is known.
There are 42 one-way exits. The most striking is room 19, inside the goblins' gate: all eight compass directions and DOWN lead to the big goblins' cavern (room 16), and there is no way back except through the goblins' back door. The long chain of narrow and steep paths from the misty mountain (rooms 68 to 79) and the goblins' tunnels (rooms 52 to 65, all called 'dark stuffy passage') are full of one-way exits, which is what makes them mazes.
