The side door is made visible, and if Bilbo is in room 42 he reads 'there is a loud crack and a hole appears about three feet from the ground. you are standing in front of the side door to the lonely mountain.' Next turn the timer expires (A968), and unless Bilbo has opened the door by then, it vanishes again.
